With the government deciding to make #hallmarking of jewelry and artefacts mandatory from the month of January 2021, the jewelry sector expects step to boost consumers’ trust and bring in much-needed transparency in sector.
Hallmarking is purity certification of the precious metals and it is a voluntary process at present time. Though the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has a hallmarking scheme for gold jewelry since April 2000, currently only 40 % of gold and silver jewelry are hallmarked.

Industry needs more hallmarking centers to be set up, so that hallmarking facility is made more accessible to jewelers.
As on month of October-end, there were 877 assaying and hallmarking centers spread across 234 districts and 26,019 jewelers have taken (BIS) registration.
