At least £3 million worth of jewelry destined to be worn by Rita Ora at the Cannes Film Festival 2019 to be held in France went missing after a courier left her suitcase on the plane.
A woman charged with delivering the jewelry to the Kosovan-born British singer took a flight from London Luton airport to Nice on May 16 and left the plane without her coat and high-value cabin baggage.
According to police sources in France, she realized her mistake and tried to return to the plane, but it was too late, and it was already boarding on the return journey.
The airline, EasyJet, when got to know about the incident located the baggage and ensured it was kept safe until the flight landed back in England, after which they transported the precious cargo was deported to Heathrow airport where it was collected by police officers.
The costly items had been lent to Ora by jewelers based in London, but it is not known who they are at this stage.
The singer, Rita ora was in the south of France for attending a series of events and parties, but was seen in diamond earrings at Charles Finch’s 10th annual Filmmakers dinner last Friday and wearing a striking diamond necklace that night before, at a party hosted by Magnum ice cream.
While in this instance the jewelry was recovered, Cannes has been hit by a string of high-profile thefts in recent years.
In 2015, robbers pulled off a €17.5 million (£13 million) jewelry raid just days before the Cannes Film Festival had started.
The robbery generally took place when the top jewelers ship in their most prized gems to adorn Hollywood celebrities on Cannes’ Croisette.
