Hutti is located in Raichur District, Karnataka State and is 80 km (50 miles) due west of Raichur, which is also the adjoining railway station.
Hutti was a minor village in 1939, with scarcely 60 or 70 huts and kutcha houses. Now here is a town Panchayat, and the population of the town is about 10,000. The population of the labour colony built by the Company is about 10,000.This mine is probably one of the most antique metal mines in the world, dating to the Pre-Ashokan period, the ancient miners having functioned down to a depth of over 2300 feet.
It is likely they had broken the rock by “fire-setting” i.e. heating it by means of fires and suddenly cooling it by pouring water onto the heated rock initiating pieces to break off. As per carbon dating is complete by Dr Rafter from Australia in the year 1955, the age of the 2 samples of timber found in old workings was predictable to be about 1980 years old. In adding to the ancient mining stated up, there was further mining in the area between 1890 and 1920 when the value of gold was about Rs. 18 for 10 gms (Rs 20.97 per tola).
The major of these ventures was at Hutti where, from 1902 to 1919, nearly 7,400 kg. Of precious gold were gotten from very rich ore, at an average yield of 19 g/metric tonne. Most of this ore came from the key mine, which reached a deepness of about 1,100 mts. below surface. The industry shut down in 1920 due to technical difficulties and absence of funds.
The Company was formed in 1947 as Hyderabad Gold mines Company Ltd., with the Hyderabad State Government holding a majority of the shares. With re-organisation of States in 1956, the Company was shifted to Mysore State (now known as Karnataka State) and converted as Hutti Gold Mines Limited.Ore containing gold is broken in the underground workings by drilling and blasting.
The cracked ore is hoisted up to surface and directed to the Mill where it is crushed and ground to fine powder. That powder is mixed with water and is send over tables covered with blankets which trap the free gold. This essence of gold is further cleansed by melting with fluxes to get rid of impurities and then cast into bars, weighing about 25000 grams Each, in which form it is known as “bullion”.The valuable gold which is not trapped by the blankets is whichever very fine or is related to other minerals, such as iron sulphide. The powdered ore containing this precious gold is agitated in a weak solution of sodium cyanide which melts the major portion of gold There are 6 separate reefs (Viz., Oakley’s Reef, Zone I Read, Middle Reef, Village Reef, Strike Reef Football and Strike Reef) which are being actively functioned in the mine at current.
The mine is developed mainly through 2 vertical shafts up to the 22nd level at current. The main mine which was extensively worked in earlier years is water-logged and is still to be re-opened later dewatering and revelation. As this is a major operation needful considerable money and time, this will be commenced time in the future between September 1984 and 31 March 1983 the mine formed about 38,56,300 metric tones of ore to yield about 26,550 kg at an normal recovery of 6.88 g per metric tonne. In addition, about 48,800 metric tones of precious gold ceilings lifted about 112 kg of valueable gold production for the year 1982 – 83 was around 62.83 kg gold per month at an normal recovery grade of 5.24 per g per metric tonne.
