Botswana’s state-owned Okavango Diamond Company showed a 20-carat shiny gemstone on 17-April that it said was the biggest blue diamond ever discovered in the nation, one of world’s top producers of natural stones.
Blue diamonds are wanted after for their color and scarcity. The 45-carat Hope Diamond is maybe the best known.
The company, known as ODC, publicized the discovery of the Okavango Blue, an elegant oval-cut stone, at an occurrence event in Botswana’s capital, Gaborone. It said the stone was classified “fancy blue” with VVS2 clarity, meaning that it holds only minute imperfections. Only a trickle of similar blue stones has come to market during the last period, of which the Okavango Blue rightfully takes its place as 1 of the most important.
The Okavango Blue was exposed last year at the Orapa mine, operated by Debswana, a joint venture between Botswana and Anglo American’s De Beers.
