CHENNAI: Police have arrested a gang which broke into more than 30 shops across the city over the last two months and made off with valuable electronic items after loading them into a truck. The police recovered 820 watches, 10kg of silver, six LED t.v and two cars from them.
The three-member of a gang were identified as Sarfraz Nawaz,(36), of Kolathur, M Mohammad Shereen, (26), of Adyar, and K Raja, (33), of Korattur. A gang targeted shops in Royapettah, Mylapore, Kotturpuram, Anna Nagar and Selaiyur.
In Korattur, Sarfraz set up a shop at Arakkonam where he sold the stolen goods at a subsidised rate without bills and made a lucrative profit. The loot from the robberies was sent to Sarfraz’s house.
The police analysed CCTV camera footage found that the same gang was involved in all the cases. Police also found a truck parked at all the crime. On Sunday night, when they observed the same vehicles entering Royapettah for another operation, the gang was rounded up.
Whenever Sarfraz was arrested by the police, he imposed injuries all over his body in a bid to stop his arrest. He had 50 injuries on his body.
In custody, it was hard for the police to safeguard him as he always managed to obtain a gun, said a police officer, adding that Sarfraz had booked a new van for his next operation before the gang was nabbed.
