Rs 1.07 cr worth gold seized at Trichy airport

TRICHY: The air intelligence unit of customs seized 3.149kg of gold, worth Rs 1.07 crore, from 6 passengers at the Trichy International Airport on Wednesday night.
Customs officials said they had intercepted 6 passengers — Mohamed Niyas of Tuticorin, Chennai residents Salman Khan, Riyas Khan, Liyakath Ali and Aman Arshid Khan and Rasuldeen of Ilyangudi — who arrived here from Kuala Lumpur in an AirAsia flight.
They were found to have concealed gold in the form of paste in their pants (waistband and bottom). The total weight of the paste recovered was 2.430kg. However, after segregation from the paste, the total weight of the 24-karat gold came down to 1.832kg.
Further searches resulted in the recovery of gold chains weighing 1.317kg.
Customs assistant commissioner M Pandaram said the smugglers had told them that they were frequent travellers engaged as couriers and had brought gold in paste form to evade detection by customs.
“As the individual value of gold being smuggled did not exceed Rs 20 lakh, the passengers have not been arrested. Further investigations are on,” he said. were .|#
