Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief electoral officer Satyabrata Sahoo said Rs 3.44 crore in cash and several crores worth gold were seized by authorities in Vellore Lok Sabha constituency after the model code of conduct came into effect for the August 5 election. He was speaking to mediapersons after releasing the final voters’ list.
There are 14.32 lakh voters in Vellore constituency. Of them, 7.31 lakh are female voters and 7.01 lakh are men. There are 105 third gender voters too, said Sahoo. Between March and July, 5,659 voters were added to the list and 99 names were deleted, he said.
Income tax had seized Rs 27 lakh from the backyard of a businessman’s residence in the constituency on July 13. Apart from cash, gold bars and jewellery weighing 2.98 kg was seized. Liquor bottles worth Rs 5 lakh were also seized.
The CEO said 20 companies of Central reserve force personnel would be deployed in the constituency. “So far 19 companies have arrived. One more company will arrive in the next few days,” said Sahoo.
He said 44 complaints have been filed against political parties for defacing walls.
