Police seized 26 kg of gold, worth around Rs 7.80 crore


Mohali – The police seized 26 kilograms of precious gold, valued around Rs 7.80 cr, from an SUV at a naka in Dera Bassi.

According to Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police 4 persons — Balbir Chand, a resident of Dobad Kallan village, also in Hamirpur, Rakesh Kumar of Kardi village in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, Jaswant Singh of Gewda village in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan and Sanjay Kumar of Baliana village in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh — had been held in this connection.

The SSP said the accused were travelling in a XUV of Mahindra when they were stopped at a naka in the Dera Bassi subdivision area.

“During an exploration of the vehicle, police recovered 26 kilograms of gold in the shape of bricks. During preliminary questioning, the accused claimed that the precious gold had been imported from South Africa. However, they could not produce any legal document or proof of the possession of the precious gold,”  

The SUV has been seized by the police.
