Police crack three chain snatching cases, one arrested


Pune: Pune police arrested a person and with it, cracked three chain snatching cases. The accused identified as a Somnath Madhukar Choube (33) has a criminal record with the Nashik and Ahmednagar police.

Somnath was taken into custody from Shrirampur jail on a warrant issued by a magisterial court in Pune on 11 December after an examination exposed his connection in a snatching case registered with the Vishrambaug police this year.

During the examination, Somnath admitted his connection in two more snatching incidents and case registered at the Market Yard and Yerawada police stations. Gold ornaments valued at Rs1.65 lakh were seized from his possession.

Somnath and his partner, Vinod Chavhanara alias Khangya, who is on the run would travel from Ahmednagar to Pune on a motorbike and snatch gold chains from women and then flee to Shrirampur.

The crime team launching a similar investigation into undetected chain snatching incidents received evidence that accused was arrested by the Ahmednagar police and that he had confessed to snatching a chain in Pune.

The accused has cases of chain snatching, vehicle theft and possession of firearms registered with the Nashik and Ahmednagar police.
