A 47-year-old day-to-day salary earner who snatched the gold chain a woman when she was alone at home, was caught red-handed by locals at Kuniamuthur here on Tuesday.
Police said that the accused has been identified as Johnson Philip of Sowripalayam. He snatched the gold chain worth Rs 52,500 and weighing 5.50 sovereigns, of V Kanima, (26).
When the victim was alone home on Tuesday, Philip wearing a helmet entered the house and snatched the gold chain. When he attempted to run away, neighbours stuck him and handed him over to the Kuniamuthur police.
During inquiries, it was found that his son was suffering from anaemia and is undergoing treatment for which, he is spending thousands of rupees. Since he could not meet the medical expenses, he decided to snatch the gold chain. This is the first time Philip had indulged in a robbery. The police registered a case of theft and arrested the accused. He was remanded in custody.
