Chennai: Customs officials detected two cases of gold smuggling at Chennai airport on Thursday and recovery of more than 1kg of gold worth ₹35.4lakh.
On suspicion, Two Indian passengers, Parameshwari, (45) and Fathima Beevi, (40), both from Madurai. Who arrived from Kuala Lumpur by Batik Airlines Flight were stopped at the exit of the arrival hall.
On searching of their luggage, officials found three emergency lights. On dismantling the lights, two thin gold plates were found hidden in the battery compartment of each lamp. Six gold plates weighing more than 1kg valued at Rs 35.4 lakh, were recovered.
