Kochi: The main accused in the gold smuggling case through Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Vishnu Somasundaram, surrendered before the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Monday. Vishnu was a close friend and financial manager of deceased violinist Bal Bhaskar.
DRI had found that it was Vishnu who coordinated and lead the smuggling team. Thus, his statements are crucial for the investigation. Earlier, DRI had arrested Prakash Thampi and taken him into custody.
Serina Shahji and Sunil Kumar, who smuggled gold through the airport and the accused in the case have given strong statements against Vishnu.
He will be produced before the economic offences court in Kochi after registering his arrest on Monday itself.
Earlier, the investigating team in the Bal Bhaskar death case under Crime Branch SP K Hari Krishnan had recorded the statement of Sunil Kumar, the 1st accused in the gold smuggling case, at the Kakkanad district jail. It was to find whether there was any link between the death of violinist Bal Bhaskar and gold smuggling case. Earlier, Vishnu had moved high court for anticipatory bail. However, rejecting it, the court directed him to surrender before the investigating team on June 17.
