TRICHY: On Tuesday, Customs officials have seized 1.09kg of precious gold jewellery worth Rs 35 lakh from 5 passengers counting a woman at the Trichy international airport.
According to Customs officials, on Tuesday night, based on a special info they led a check with travelers who inwards at the Trichy airport from Kuala Lumpur by an Air Asia flight.
They check 4 passengers identified as Sherif, Riaz, Rizwan of Chennai and Saravanan from Trichy. During the process they found that they had hidden 600 grams of precious gold in their belongings. The precious gold was recovered and authorities are examining.
Meanwhile, sleuths of the customs also recovered 2,000 British currency notes equal to Rs 1.77 lakh from a passenger recognized as Syed Abuthahir of Ramanathapuram on Wednesday. He was about to board a Kuala Lumpur-bound Malindo Air flight.
The money was kept hidden in the passenger’s waist. Further inquiries are on.
In another incident, on Tuesday, customs seized incomplete gold chain of 24-karat. The gold weighing 499.200-gram worth at Rs 15.98 lakh was seized from a lady passenger who arrived at the airport from Singapore by an Air India Express flight.
