Gold seized at Chennai International Airport


CHENNAI: 4 people were detained and 4.8-kilogram gold valued 2.05 crore was detained from them at the Chennai international airport. A worker of a food retail company at airport was also among those got arrested.
On Saturday, while on surveillance duty at departure terminal, Customs officers saw that a woman who was trying to exit Customs bay in hurry was stopped by the lady CISF officer for routine frisking.
Customs officials found cloth sack attached to her waist from which 6 bundles wrapped with black adhesive tapes were found. On opening packets, 24 yellow metal bars weighing 2.8 kilogram and valued at 1.17 cr was recovered and seized under the Customs Act.
The woman was recognized as 29-year-old A Vijaykumari an employee of a private food outlet at airport. On questioning, she knowledgeable that gold had been handed over to her by 32-year-old A Ayesha Banu. Based on her info, Ayesha and her accomplice 25-year-old S Ibrahim, were apprehended. Both were proceeding to New Delhi in Air India flight. They told customs officials that yellow metal was handed over to them by a person in transit area. All 3 were arrested. Efforts are on to nab other associates of gang.
In another case on Saturday, 19-year-old Mohamed Azeem Sarook of Ramanathapuram arrived from the Colombo and was stopped at the exit gate. Officials found 2 sachets containing yellow metal paste on him. The yellow metal is worth at 25.16 lakh. In yet another case, gold weighing valued 50.55 lakhs was seized from a passenger who arrived from the Bangkok on Sunday.
