The customs sleuths on Sunday had a field day as they foiled attempts to smuggle gold, foreign currency and cigarettes in less than 24 hours.
According to the officials, the foreign currency worth Rs 26. 34 lakh was seized from a passenger bound for Dubai at the Cochin International Airport Limited.
The currency notes were kept immersed in rice powder. US Dollars, Dirhams, Kuwait Dinar and Bahrain Dinar were among the seized currencies. Officers said that currency was wrapped in a grey plastic sheet concealed in rice powder inside a trolley bag.
In three other case, Customs sleuths also seized 49 cartons of cigarettes, three gold chains weighing over 500 grams and 16 gold rods kept in pens.
The gold weighing over 233 grams was hidden as fine rods inside the refill of pens was recovered. The seizures exemplified the vigil the department was keeping at the airport.
