Trichy: Directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) Sleuths have recovered 7.7 kilograms of gold ornaments worth over Rs 2.30 crore from 5 passengers who arrived at the international airport on Wednesday.
The DRI officials said that they conducted a detailed checking of all passengers who arrived here from various destinations like Singapore, Sharjah Kuala Lumpur and Colombo.
During the procedure, they produced suspicious of 5 passengers arrived from Kuala Lumpur by Air Asia and Malindo Air.
When all the five passengers, including a woman, were booked to the private room and their possessions checked, they came to identify that all of them had hidden gold ornaments in their baggage.
Then, officials seized 1.4 kg gold from Jainulabudeen Abdul Subani and 2.5 kg gold from Jumaikhan Sardar Alamkhan both from Chennai.
They too seized 1.3 kg of gold from Samsudeen Abdul Masjeed Mohammed and 1.3 kg of gold from Khaja Mohideen Azarudeen, both from Ilayankudi in Ramnad district and also 1.25 kg of gold from Jaibunisha of Trichy.
The arrested passengers are being questioned to collect further details about the gold seizure.
