Thiruvananthapuram: on Monday, the air customs officials at Thiruvananthapuram seized over 500g of gold from a passenger who stopped here in an Emirates Flight during the early hours.
The accused identified as Bava Ahammed Sinan of SS Manzil, Chengala in Kasaragod. He was arrested when he arrived from Dubai in Emirates flight. The officials seized 564.55-gram gold in thin foils concealed inside two trolley luggage of the passenger.
Officials said that the passenger had torn open the cloth coating inside the lid of the trolley luggage to hide the gold. Since the top has a pouch where passengers normally keep articles like toothbrushes, shaving set and other grooming products, it would be hard to notice the concealed pouch. Customs officials seized gold was worth about Rs 17 lakh.
The suspect claimed that the gold belonged to him. Since the worth of gold seized was less than Rs 1 crore, the officials let him go on bail after recording his custody.
The same component had detained another passenger, Mohammed Ali Sikkander, hailing from Madurai in Tamil Nadu on last Friday.
When he arrived here with foreign currencies valued at Rs 48.56 lakh. He also arrived here from Dubai in Fly Dubai flight. He was carrying foreign currencies, including UAE Dirhams, US Dollars, and Saudi Riyals.
On suspicion, he was arrested by CISF officials and he was handed over to the customs department, who recorded his custody. An investigation is happening to find out the basis of the currency as well as for whom it was meant for.
