Customs officials seized gold jewellery weighing 500g worth about Rs 16 lakh from three passengers at the Trichy international passenger on Thursday.
The accused were identified as Amudha from Tiruvarur, Zarina from Ramanathapuram and Jabir Ahmed from Thondi.
According to the airport source, the three arrested passengers had reached Trichy on different flights, Zarina and Amudha arrived from Singapore and Jabir Ahmed from Kuala Lumpur.
During the regular checking, all three were arrested. Ahmed had allegedly hidden the gold in his rectum and Amudha hid it in her hand luggage while Zarina had concealed the gold inside her outfit. The customs officials launched an investigation after seizing the gold.
On November 14, officials recovered 1.25kg gold from three passengers and arrived Trichy via AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur. They smuggled gold was worth Rs 34 lakh.
