CHENNAI: Customs officials at Chennai international airport on Monday seized 1.1kg of gold hidden in a Bluetooth speaker and arrested a passenger who smuggled it from a foreign country.
Customs officials told that they had intercepted Sadik Shaik, 22, of Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, who arrived here from Riyadh via Bahrain in a Gulf Air flight. The passenger was questioned. As he was indirect in his replies, his baggage was taken up for examination.
During the examination of his checked-in baggage, 1 Bluetooth speaker was found. On examination, 10 gold bars with foreign markings and 1 gold cut bar — totally weighing 1.1kg and worth at Rs 38 lakh — were found concealed cleverly inside the speaker.
