Cash, gold worth Rs 1.7 lakh stolen from Laxmi Narayan temple in Mapusa


MAPUSA: Unknown persons targeted Laxmi Narayan temple located in the heart of the Mapusa town and escaped with cash and gold ornaments valued at Rs 1.7 lakh during the intervening hours of Sunday night and Monday morning.

Police said that the temple is located in Feira Baixa and is a minute distance away from the Mapusa police station at Ansabhat.

Temple authorities said that they were fortunate that main gold ornaments of the idol were kept in bank lockers and the thieves did not enter the temple sanctorum where the idols are sited.

When the temple priest observed the doors of his room was open and his possessions were scattered in the floor, the event came to light on Monday morning. Immediately, the priest informed the temple authorities and police rushed to the place.

The thieves targeted the kitchen from where they broke the wooden divider and entered into the priest’s room and fled away with cash of about Rs 20,000.

Thieves used a gas reaper and cylinder to cut the window grill to enter into the temple properties and fled away cash of about Rs one lakh from the donation container.

Two lockers in the office area were also broken and valuables including 4 arm bracelets and a chain were stolen.
