Ranchi: A 19-year-old chain snatcher was arrested from Hindpiri after an hour-long chase during which he jumped roofs, scaled tubes and continued holed up in sewers on Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday, accused Saddam is a serial chain snatcher was sent to jail in connection with an August 24 snatching when he targeted a doctor in crowded High Bazaar and the chain has been recovered.
On August 21, he was awarded hard custody of two and a half years along with a fine of Rs 5,000 by a local court in one of the cases. As the quantum of punishment was less than 3 years, he had secured a bail. However, within 3 days, he committed another crime.
Police said they analysed in on Saddam from footage of CCTV cameras installed near the spot where he and his assistant, Rahul, snatched the chain from Dr Nisha Maheshwari on August 25. When police rushed his house in Hindpiri, he fled through the back door and took shelter in a three-storey building.
The chase began when Saddam hopped from the roof of one building to another and scaled pipes to evade arrest. He also crawled into a sewer from where he was finally pulled out.
Police have recovered a bike used in the crime. During questioning, he exposed the names of his aides. In the last one week, Ranchi police have arrested eight members of separate snatch gangs.
Saddam, who is a stunt biker, he told that he had snatched ornaments and cellphones from as many as 70 people in the past. He told police that he had snatched a chain at Naga Baba Khatal in front of a police control van last year.
