Chennai: sleuths customs Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 6.5kg of gold worth two crores from an aeroplane at Chennai airport on Monday morning.
Airport sources said, the baggage of all the passenger on the flight was checked after they landed but nothing was found. Then, they acquired permission from the airport authorities to check aboard the flight.
The officials searched the flight and found the gold hidden under a seat of the aircraft. Six gold bars were wrapped in brown bags.
The flight started from Dubai landed at Delhi, DRI officials suspect that gold might have been smuggled from Dubai. Officials seized the gold bars weighing 6.5 kg and it was valued at Rs 2crores.
Airport police are conducted examination based on CCTV footage recovered and the airport to identify smugglers who had smuggled the gold.
